Angry Father Takes Revenge on Alleged Drunk Driver

The angry father of a man who was killed when his motorbike crashed into the vehicle of a driver who was allegedly DUI at the time has decided to vent his rage and attacked the driver while he was in court. Now, he has to face his own justice as he has been arrested for two counts of battery.

The incident happened on Monday, when the driver appeared for his arraignment. The original charge had been made after the crash took place near Davie in Florida. The prosecution alleged that John Powers made a U-turn on state highway 6 and his maneuver forced a motorcycle rider who was riding in the opposite direction to use his brakes suddenly. Juan Gonzalez Junior, the rider of the motorbike, couldn’t avoid Powers’ car and hit it, with fatal consequences. The police officers who arrived at the scene of the crash alleged that Powers was DUI at the time and his inebriation was the cause of the crash. He was then charged with DUI manslaughter and for manslaughter with an illegal blood alcohol level. His blood alcohol level at the time was recorded as over twice the state legal limit of 0.08%

The attack on Powers took place when he and a male friend were visiting the men’s room at the courthouse. On entering the bathroom, Juan Gonzalez Sr., the dead motorcycle rider’s father allegedly attacked both the two men and struck Powers several times before he fell to the ground. He was then alleged to have looked directly at Powers and said that he was “watching him because he had killed his son”.

Powers was apparently covered in blood after the attack. He went back into the courtroom and explained what had happened to the Circuit Judge, Mark Browd, who then made an order for Gonzalez’s arrest.

Gonzalez Senior is likely to go to jail for a year because of the attack if he is found guilty of the two misdemeanor charges of battery against the two men. Apparently, the aggrieved father has been in trouble before. He was arrested in 2006 on a charge of aggravated assault using a deadly weapon. He was also arrested for leaving the scene of an accident and dangerous driving. He was sentenced to 3 years of probation as a result of convictions for these charges.

John Powers pleaded not guilty to the DUI manslaughter charge and is expected to be back in court to defend himself in March next year. The fact that he was attacked by the motorcycle riders father while in court is not expected to have any bearing on his impending trial.

Fortunately, our justice system is nothing like the sort of justice that Juan Gonzalez, Sr. may have had in mind. John Powers will only be found guilty if the prosecution can provide evidence that leaves no reasonable doubt in the minds of the jury that will be present at his trial.
